The Minister of Information Launches Training on Preventing the Dissemination of Hate Speech During Electoral Periods

Mogadishu, 03 May 2026: This two-day workshop has brought together more than 35 journalists from 21 media outlets operating in Mogadishu.

The primary objective of the workshop is to strengthen journalists’ understanding of their critical role in ensuring responsible reporting throughout the electoral process, particularly in preventing the spread of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech that could undermine public trust and social stability.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Daud Aweis Jama, emphasized that the media can play a pivotal role in safeguarding electoral stability and countering hate speech that may fuel tensions during election periods.

“The media plays an essential role in raising public awareness and safeguarding the integrity of electoral information. It is imperative that journalists ground their reporting in accurate information, balance, and professional responsibility in order to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.”

Minister Daud urged journalists to enhance balanced coverage of political organizations and stakeholders while consistently amplifying voices that advocate for peace and state-building.

Throughout the workshop, which is supported by the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), participants will receive comprehensive training on understanding the national electoral system, protecting the integrity of election-related information, fact-checking, and combating hate speech.

The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to continuing professional development programs aimed at enhancing journalists’ skills and promoting media ethics, in support of credible, peaceful, and transparent elections.
